Info on the Seminar & Publication Unit
The Seminar and Publications Unit, under the Office of the Director-General, is headed by the Institute
Editor. It is concerned with the preparation and editing of seminar proceedings for publications, in addition to the more general task if editing papers and monographs emanating from both the Research and Studies
Departments. The unit is also involved in organizing seminars and workshops and provides rapporteuring services during conferences. It publishes the Nigerian Journal of Policy and Strategy,
among other publications, and the National Institute Bulletin.
The Journal, a bi-annual publication, is designed to provide a scholarly medium for researchers and practitioners in the area of policy and strategy, while the bulletin focuses on current happenings and developments within the institute. It is published twice a year. The Seminar and Publications unit is equipped with a functional printing press to produce both the Institute's publications, programmes and stationery as well as undertake commercial productions. Printing enquires should be directed to the Institute Editor.
The sales section distributes and markets the Institute's publications within Nigeria and aboard. A list of National Institute publications is available on request and payment for purchased items is by bank draft
payable to "The National Institute, Kurd". The publications may also be purchased at the Unit's bookstore. STATE OF AFFAIRS 2001
Year 2001 has been quite challenging for the Seminar and Publications Unit with major
innovations to reposition the Unit for more effective performance. With a current staff strength of 24, including editors, computer operators, printers, marketers and support staffs, the Unit was able to discharge its
responsibilities creditably and engage in qualitative productions. The highlight of activities during the year are indicated below:
- Editorial Board: the Institute's Editorial Board and Editorial Committee were reconstituted by the management to guide the unit and make it more effective in discharging its publications mandate.
- Production Equipment: all the printing equipment was overhauled and serviced this year, resulting in smoother operations and better-printed copies.
- Excursion to Heritage Press Abuja: for the first time ever, all the staff of the Unit went on an excursion. The one-day tour on the 25th
of May 2001 took the Unit to Heritage Press Ltd Abuja to observe the operations of a modern press with a view to expanding the horizon of the staff preparatory to the proposed re-equipping and digitalisation of the Unit.
- Institute Bulletin and Year Book: the unit published two editions of the Institute Bulletin as scheduled. Also for the first time, the unit produced the Institute Year Book (2001), which in previous years was a
private endeavour of Senior Executive Course participants. The unit also produced programmes, cards and regular stationeries requirements of the Institute such as SEC 23 programme, folders and memo pads for the 4
th Presidential Retreat for Ministers and Permanent Secretaries, Institute brochure, headed papers, file jackets etc.
- Data Bank: a data bank of current affairs and other information was established in the unit for easy reference by researchers and Institute management.
- Computers: the unit now possesses better computers capability, which through far form ideal has greatly improved the work output.
- Nigerian Journal of Policy and Strategy and other Publications: modalities are now in place to resume the publication of the Institute's journal, the Nigerian Journal of Policy and Strategy, and other
publications from early 2002.
- Relocation: as a result of the demolition and on-going reconstruction of the old Administrative Block, the whole Unit is now co-located in the Printing Press Hall. A couple of wooden partitions has provided
additional office accommodation, which has resulted into closer and more effective interaction among staffs of the unit leading to improved output.
